There are moments when something long felt—but never fully named—begins to take shape.

For many, that knowing lives in nature.

Today, an emerging intersection of nature-based healing, Environmental Psychology, and psychedelic science is giving language to this experience. Some are beginning to call it ecodelia—a way of understanding healing through relationship with the living world.

In deepening the relationship with our Earth home, a quiet knowing emerges—an interconnection with the web of life. From here, a generative, self-sustaining rhythm begins to move through how we relate to ourselves, to others, and to the living world. What follows is not effort, but remembrance: a natural devotion to care for the Earth and all her inhabitants, born from a sense of belonging.

My earliest and most joyful memories are rooted in immersion in the natural world.

The oak-filled woods behind my childhood home became entire universes—trees to climb, forts to build, and quiet pockets of life waiting to be discovered. My brother and I spent long days outside, following curiosity wherever it led. Vine canopies carried us into new vantage points. Ponds, sand, and soil revealed intricate, living systems just beneath the surface.

The beach held its own rhythm. Coquinas moved in and out with the tide, their small, colorful, shelled bodies tracing patterns in the shifting shoreline. Seagulls drifted effortlessly on the salt air. The warm, steady presence of the Gulf of Mexico offered something grounding and familiar—a quiet, recurring sense of renewal.

Everything felt alive.
Every sense was engaged.
There was freedom, wonder, and an unspoken trust in what the natural world would reveal next.

Nature—its elements, creatures, flora, and fauna—imprinted itself into my being. I knew, even then, that this relationship was one I would carry and nurture for the rest of my life.

The warm, steady presence of the Gulf of Mexico offered something grounding and familiar—a quiet, recurring sense of renewal.

Listening to the Body, Returning to the Earth

This connection began to shape how I lived.

I listened more closely to my body—what supported energy, strength, and vitality—so I could venture out into the deep wilderness, confident that my body would take me where my spirit called me to witness. Health became less of an idea and more of a relationship.

I began to explore herbs as medicine and plants as teachers, including adaptogenic and consciousness-altering varieties. When non-ordinary states of consciousness via plant guidance unfolded in natural settings—on forest trails, in mountain ranges, beneath open skies—something within me aligned.

The expanded states of awareness didn’t take me away from myself.
They brought me back.

Remembering that I came from the natural world, and that I was never separate from it.

I experienced a deep sense of appreciation and awe—an ecodelic state—each time I ventured into open spaces, wandering the living landscape without a set destination and allowing each emerging facet of life to guide me.

Explore Rocky Mountain National Park, just under an hour from Sacred Peaks Retreat—an extension of the landscape that holds this work.

What Is Ecodelia?

Ecodelia is not yet a formal scientific field, unlike Ecopsychology, but it reflects a growing convergence of research and lived experience.

It is an emerging, informal term used to describe the intersection of ecological awareness and expanded states of consciousness. While not formally defined within scientific literature, it points to a meaningful and increasingly studied relationship.

Research in ecopsychology and related disciplines shows that connection with nature supports emotional regulation, stress reduction, and a deeper sense of meaning. Work from the Johns Hopkins Center for Psychedelic and Consciousness Research and researchers like Robin Carhart-Harris suggests that these states can deepen nature relatedness and a sense of interconnected awareness.

These effects appear to be supported by changes in brain network flexibility, and heightened sensitivity to environmental context, pointing to the therapeutic importance of nature-based settings in psychedelic work.

Ecodelia lives at this intersection:

Nature-based healing

Human–environment relationship

Expanded states of consciousness

It is less about a new modality, and more about a remembered orientation—healing through relationship with the living world.

Nature’s portals often reveal transformative, threshold experiences.

Why This Matters Now

Modern life often separates us from the environments that regulate and restore us.

What once felt like a personal experience is now being recognized more widely. As distance from wild, untamed landscapes increases, so too can a subtle disconnection—from ourselves, from our communities, and from a deeper sense of responsibility to care for the ecosystems we are part of.

There is a growing body of research, alongside a community of practitioners, who share a reverence for the Earth. Together, they are exploring practices that support reconnection with the land, a return to wholeness, and a way of extending that relationship beyond the individual.

Nature-based healing offers a return to what is already present:

sensory awareness

grounded presence

a felt sense of belonging

This is not abstract. It is physiological, psychological, and relational.

Healing does not occur in isolation. It unfolds within living systems, and we are inseparable from the whole.

An Invitation

This work is not something to learn from a distance.
It is something to be lived.

At Sacred Peaks Retreat, these principles come to life through nature-immersed, guided experiences held in relationship with the land. Surrounded by pine forests, mountain air, and open sky, we create space to slow down, listen, and reconnect—within yourself and with the living world around you.

If you feel the resonance of this path—if something in you recognizes this remembering—you are invited.

In the Sacred Peaks Retreat blog series, my next theme will be: “What to Expect (and What Not to Expect) from a Guided Psilocybin Retreat in Colorado”
